Denny's

Restaurant icon Denny's desire to reconnect with America was a huge success.

With humble beginnings in Lakewood, Ca in 1953, Harold Butler founded Danny's Donuts with first year earnings of $120,000. Profits were used to open additional donut shops and expand a menu to include sandwiches and other entrees. Danny's Donuts was renamed Denny's Coffee Shops and in 1959 renamed Denny's Restaurants with 20 Denny's serving customers by years end.

During the next two decades Denny's grew with an ambitious franchising program, an initial public offering on the American and Pacific Coast Stock Exchanges and the introduction of the Original Grand Slam breakfast. Setting a new standard in breakfast dining by offering a complete meal inspired by one of America's favorite pastimes and named for the baseball play. Since its introduction 32 years ago Denny's has served over 225 million Grand Slam Breakfasts to guests.

Earlier this month Denny's definitely connected again with the American public with the Denny's Free Grand Slam Giveaway. Customers showed how much they love Denny's Grand Slam supporting the restaurants across America where approximately 2 million Grand Slams were served. On average, 130 were served per restaurant per hour over the eight hour event.

Denny's committed to the American stimulus package spending close to $5 million for the cost of food, the Super Bowl spot and other production costs. Cash registers rang up checks that included juice, coffee and side orders. Servers had gratuity on the table or added to the guest check. All restaurants were at capacity during the giveaway with average wait time for a Grand Slam approximately one hour with tables being turned about every twenty minutes.

Born in southern California the worldwide brand was a huge hit with the American people generating heartwarming experiences for servers, managers and customers.

An extraordinary day for an American Icon.
